Molagootal Recipe Ingredients
- 1 tsp oil
- 2 tsp urad dal
- 3 whole red chillies
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 cup toor dal
- 3 cups spinach (palak), finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
- Salt to taste
- For tempering:
- 2 tsp coconut oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 2 tsp split urad dal
- whole red chillies
How to Prepare
- Cook the dal: In a pressure cooker, combine 1-2 cups of water and ½ tsp turmeric powder with the dal. Cook for 3-4 whistles until the dal turns soft and mushy.
- Mash the dal: Once done, mash the cooked dal and set it aside.
- Prepare the seasoning: In a pan, heat oil, add urad dal and whole red chillies. Stir until golden, then turn off the heat.
- Grind the spices: Let the mixture cool, then transfer it to a grinder. Add grated coconut, cumin seeds, and water as needed. Blend until smooth.
- Cook the spinach: In a pan, add chopped spinach leaves, ½ cup water, and a pinch of salt. Cook for a few minutes until softened.
- Blend the spinach: Once cooled, blend the spinach to a smooth puree.
- Mix everything: Pour the spinach puree into a kadhai, add the mashed dal, and the ground mixture. Stir well and season with salt.
- Simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil, then let it simmer for a few minutes.
- Make the tempering: Heat coconut oil, add mustard seeds, split urad dal, and whole red chillies.
- Finish the dish: Once the seeds splutter, pour the tempering over the spinach preparation. Serve hot with rice, dosa, or rotis for a wholesome meal.
