Ingredients for Amritsari Sookhi Dal Recipe

  • 1 Cup urad dal
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

How to Prepare

  • Rinse the lentils thoroughly and pressure cook them with three cups of water until soft and mushy.
  • In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee over medium heat.
  • Add cumin seeds. Allow them to splutter.
  • Add finely chopped onions and green chilies. Saute until the onions turn golden brown.
  • Stir in turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala. Cook for a minute to let the spices release their flavours.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil starts to separate.
  • Drain the cooked dal and add it to the pan.
  • Allow the dal to simmer for 5 minutes on low heat, letting the flavours meld together. Add salt to taste.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and lemon juice. Your Amritsari Sookhi Dal is ready to be served!
