Ingredients of Kerala Style Parippu (Masoor Dal) Curry

  1. 1/2 cup Masoor dal
  2. 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  3. to taste Salt
  4. Water, to boil the dal
  5. For coconut curry paste:
  6. 1/2 cup Freshly grated coconut
  7. 2-3 Green chillies
  8. 1/2 tsp Jeera
  9. 1 tbsp Chopped onion
  10. Water, to blend
  11. For tadka:
  12. 1 tbsp Coconut oil
  13. 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  14. 8-10 Curry leaves
  15. 2 Red chillies
  16. 2 tbsp Onion, sliced

How to Prepare

  1. Rinse the dal and pressure cook it with turmeric powder, salt, and water for 5-6 whistles.
  2. Let the pressure release completely, then whisk the dal into a smooth paste. Adjust the salt if needed and set it aside.
  3. In a blender, combine grated coconut, green chili, cumin seeds, onion, and water. Blend into a smooth paste.
  4. Pour the cooked dal and coconut paste into a pan and boil on medium heat for 6 minutes.
  5. For the tadka, heat coconut oil or ghee in a pan. Add mustard seeds, red chili, and curry leaves. Sauté onions until golden brown.
  6. Pour the tadka over the dal-coconut curry and serve hot.
